As you may have guessed from the tune name, this is a Shetland reel.
I found it in the ‘English Folk Dance and Song Society Vol. 9 December 1960’.
It appeared in a section about a Shetland fiddler called John Stickle (1875-1957) and the author of the section, Patrick Shuldham-Shaw, collected this tune from Stickle on the 3rd July 1946.
Oot An’ In Da Hairbour
Nice one Dan.
Not to be confused with a couple of other Shetland jobs with similar names 🙂
Are you getting to many York sessions at all? I will try and do a flying visit to the Maltings if I am in York at all, also I may be at York Folk Weekend, would be great to catch up and share tunes again,
X2 is transcribed from a 1999 recording of Gibbie Hutchison from the Shetland island of Whalsay who, as well as being a fiddler, was a fisherman. He called it “Muckla Skerry a’ Three”, after an island in a three island group: Muckla Skerry, Little Skerry and the Vong.
