“Ripple Of The Teign” ~ C: Bob Cann

S: Bob Cann

A favourite English box player and character there are numerous different versions of this and I’m hoping others will offer theirs here, as I will. Bob plays this as given, 62 bars, but I’ve been more familiar with it as a 32 bar tune. Using the given transcription for a start, here’s a 32 bar version ~

The version here is 32 bars in length and while the A-part is basically the same as the B-part here, the B-part is quite different… Here is another take based on the book, transcribed differently and for comparison:

Notes on this tune: "Composed by Bob Cann: given here in G, bugt it was Bob’s practice to alternate between G and D when playing it. Bob did not write this B music until some considerable time after the A, and in the meanwhile other B musics were written for it." - Barry Callaghan

Ripple of the Teign

Thanks for that, C. Took me straight back to the 60s and village dances on the edge of Dartmoor in places like Throwleigh, Gidleigh and South Zeal. Bob Cann sitting centre stage with melodeon and amp, caller and band rolled into one, barrel of beer at one side of the stage and cider at the other. All ancient sunlight now.

Thanks for that description, well crafted in a few words, and a smile raiser… ๐Ÿ™‚ I also like and appreciate "ancient sunlight"…

“Ripple Of The Teign” ~ from memory

Over time we seem to have gathered a bit more carnival into it… ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks, C. Can’t claim any credit for "ancient sunlight" as it’s the title of Henry Williamson’s 15 volume autobiographical novel "The Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight". Will provide more details off-post if you’re interested.

My interest has few bounds, especially in people and what motivates them and draws their interest, what makes people tick, on or off beat, harmony and dischord… I’ll be doing a little surfing on those 15 volumes if not necessarily reading them, and any emailed thoughts you take time to format and send will be read with interest… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hen’r’y

Henry Williamson & Bob Cann are a lovely match…

hard core English - but sounds like a Trantella from Sicilia ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, I thought that too, a Tarantella or a Quickstep… ๐Ÿ˜‰
