Tune info:

Hey guys, yes I’m back again after another epic Fleadh Cheol na hÉireann in Cavan last week, and have yet again managed to slip out a few strands of notes into a tune.

The name of the tune is both Molly’s Reel, and The Cavan Bedtime Bite, the latter referring to those funny love-bites we call hickeys. In simpler terms, "twas a great night during the fleadh"…

I play this one as a slow reel and usually follow it up with another of my own tunes, The Drumbshambles Reel. This can be found here:

https://thesession.org/tunes/11416

I believe it reflects my slightly rebellious, contempory side to the Irish music scene. However, Drumbshambles is a more "traditional" sounding tune, just to bring things back homeward bound….

Cheers, Cían Ó

Whether this will actually do anything, given what you’ve put in your profile, but here goes…

From the FAQs:

"Can I submit my own compositions?
Well… The Session isn’t really intended for that. If you do post one of your own compositions, then you must do your "penance", so to speak, by balancing each original composition with about five trad tunes."

And regarding your profile statement,

"Anyhow, you will find here a nice selection of a few old greats, loads of modern contempory shtuff and a selection of my own compositions….faq’s? compositions? bla bla bla….its keeping the music alive by creating new shtuff, being adventurous with keys and time sigs. 7/8 for the love of it! Unrale shtuff…"

If you are prolific, stick your compositions in your profile page. Other people do it. At least have the courtesy to abide by the same rules as most people do here.

If you’ve written a tune, play it at sessions, get other people to pick it up, let it spread, and then someone else can submit it when it starts becoming part of repertoires. That’s how the tradition develops.

Compositions,yeah!

Ok, so new compositions are frowned upon on this site. But it doesn’t actually say they are not allowed.

The fact that I put them up and don’t do the "pennance" so to say, is that when I find a real old tune, no doubt someone already has it posted, or it’s impossible to transcribe.

p.s., most of my compositions are played in wide enough circles of sessions/concerts/seisiúin shows/etc., so they are getting enough publicity for me to believe I should post them on here….

Regards,
Cían Ó…….

It’s your attitude to it that I don’t agree with.

Wwwwhhhhuuuuuussssssshhhhh

That kettle is blowing hot steam again.

Look if it means so much to you, which obviously it does, Ill post a Traditional tune tonight ok?

And I’m being nice, dont get me mad now with such comments like your previous above.

Regards,

Cían.

Hey, I’m just asking you at least respect how the site works. No, you’re right, it’s not a rule, because enforcing too many rules would probably ruin the site. But saying you find transcribing tunes difficult doesn’t mean you can just post your own compositions and think that’s ok.

And who says it needs to be a real old tune? There are plenty of new albums out there with, by way of an example, lots of 7/8 tunes that haven’t been posted here.

As for tunes that are already here, what if you know a different version? What’s wrong with transcribing your own version and putting it in the comments page? It’s not like there’s a competition to see who can post the most tunes. And after all, it is also a way in which you can help develop the tradition.

And if you want to blow your own trumpet with "p.s., most of my compositions are played in wide enough circles of sessions/concerts/seisiúin shows/etc., so they are getting enough publicity for me to believe I should post them on here…." then go ahead, publish a tunebook or something.

What about a seperate link here for new compositions? Just an idea. Of course keep this link for ‘traditional tunes’. I’m a composer of tunes. My tunes are very much traditional. Someone told me that my tunes integrate very well with other older trad tunes

Compositions Link:

Brilliant idea, it was actually mentioned to me a few minutes before you posted this, and also by quite a few other trad heads in the course in UL…

Its also a pitty you cant post your airs up on this site too, be nice to learn a few off ye!

….

Cian O and smash the windows, can we keep this a little less personal. both of ye are making valid points and i think ye just need to step back,.
cians right in the fact that sometimes it does feel like your being abused for even contemplating uploading a *deep intake of breath* new composition but i think thats just some people (not a dig at you smash the windows)
however there are some people on this who constantly upload new compositions without any info and tbh some of the tunes can be quite sh1t…..and without adding any old tunes to counter balance. so i think we just need to find a balance and gently remind people that they should try and find a nice trad tune to upload alongside there own compositions. have had the "compositions" tab idea for some time and was just wondering how to contact the webmaster about it???

Postscript

and that comment about new compositions being awful does not apply to you cian. i like yours. and i tell you when they are awful anyway ;)

Cheers

Oh I know that quite well, quare tack! But it stops me putting the stupid ones out into the public domain!

Mostly Appreciated!

Mixo….

Like I said, I don’t object to you actually uploading your compositions, and tbh, I quite like some of them too. It just seemed like you thought it is fine to do it despite the generally-accepted way the site works.

Just Sayin…

I have ta say its a pretty great tune! Whoever you’re on about must be a fair legend? ;) Got any more new tunes??

Legendary!!

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt the person is a legend and well what the tune represents, lets say a special talent, (a sore talent) is legendary also…

There might be a few tunes still to come yes, but I must do pennance first with 5 trad tunes…ive 1down so 4 more to find!

Oh and one of the tunes also has a special recognition with the fleadh in Cavan, more so Rocklands, more so after the fore mentoned game of kings, or rather what followed!

…..

Mixo, less of the bullsh*t and more plain speaking please. You forget some of us know you in real life and are in on the fact that this is not your normal vocabulary or manner of speaking ;) and yes the female in mention is a legend…=D

ps. im in the process of doing your penance for you so you owe me dear ;P

Mrs. Lonal Dunny

Arguably, given that you have posted 6 compositions including this one, along with one duplicate and 4 other tunes, your penance is ~25 tunes.

:P

Lonal Dunny!!!!!!

Yurt….alright! LONAL DUNNY….If I was to speak in my regular manner, it wouldn’t read acceptably well….f**k it…I’ll go back to the regular shtuff so…

And 25? really? Can different versions of tunes count? Because I’ve thousands…seeing as you counted in the duplicate Smash, I can only assume you’re counting them in…

So if Mrs. Lonal Dunny submits tunes for me, that also counts as we are working on this, let say compositional spurt so to speak, I have.

"As for tunes that are already here, what if you know a different version? What’s wrong with transcribing your own version and putting it in the comments page? It’s not like there’s a competition to see who can post the most tunes. And after all, it is also a way in which you can help develop the tradition."

Absolutely! Posting your own versions of tunes, or versions from recordings you like, in the comments section of a tune already here, is a good thing! You’ll find examples all over the site.

Sick for you Mixo :L

Hahaha yes thats 25 tunes… have to comply with the law now! :L and where is this rocklands tune?? post me a link "por favor" :P And how are things mrs. D? 🙂 any tunes?

Rocklands…

Its en-route…if Im allowed post it, I will!!!!
