Background Information

This is a Scandinavian tune by Petters Erik Eriksson that I personally first heard played by Andy Cutting on his self-titled album “Andy Cutting”. The tune is called CEG on the album but Grind Hans Jässpodspolska is how it is normally known I think. There is some more discussion about it here: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,2475.0.html

This tune is a Polska of course…

Note - This tune is a Polska but I submitted it as a slip jig in order to get the time signature as 9/8.

It’s more conventional to notate polskas in 3/4.

This tune was not composed by Petters Erik, but is “efter” (after) him. This means “from the playing of”.

Petters Erik Eriksson (1899-1976) was from Backa, in Rättvik, Dalarna.
A jässpôdspolska was part of a wedding celebration in that part of Sweden. I think “jäss” might be a dialect form of “gäst” (guest), so the polska might be for the guests. It has been translated as a “banquet polska”. If anyone from that part of Sweden could shed further light on this it would be nice.

There are many variants of the tune. Also the name of the player Petters Erik got the tune from has been spelled “Grinds Hans”, “Grins Hans” and “Grind Hans” (even “Grins Ansa”).

Here’s one setting in 3/4 - it displays OK in Barfly, but not in all other programmes. The triplets are crotchets, not quavers.

Jässpôd relates to the Danish “gæstebud” (feast).

Looks odd in AbcNavigator - just remember the triplets are crotchets and you have it.

Grind Hans Jässpôdspolska

Yawn!

Re: Grind Hans Jässpôdspolska

Apparently this tune is from Rättvik, Dalarna, and was usually played in C, but someone (Per Gudmundsson?) set it in G and so it was known as the ‘C into G’ polska‘ - in Swedish: ’CiG‘. Except that the Swedish vowel ’i‘ is pronounced like the English ’e‘, so over here it got called the ’CeG’ polska. A bloke down the pub told me, so it must be true.

There’s a 2-part setting in C in Rowan Piggott’s book, ‘Swedish Fiddle Tunes’ (p.54) and two more arrangements in G at http://www.rudemex.co.uk/library/Scandinavian/01tunelib_Scandi.php under the title ‘CiG’. At one of our local sessions it’s been played a few times with a polska called ‘Julottan’.
