A Curious Denis Murphy Jig

This is the title given for the tune on Mick O’Brien & Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh’s “Deadly Buzz”. It says in the liner notes of said CD that Caoimhín spent a summer working at the Traditional Music Archive in Dublin (one of my all-time favorite flute players, Michael Tubridy, got him the job). My guess is that he heard this tune on a recording that bore only the label “Denis Murphy”. Hence the lack of a proper name for the tune. If anybody has an actual name for this one, please put in your 2 cents below…

Re: A Curious Denis Murphy

Hello there, I myself became curious about the tune and heard Gerry Harrington and Billy Clifford(Julia) play and refer to it as “The trip to the quarry” a lovely tune indeed

Re: Trip To The Quarry

The Trip to the Quarry is indeed the name given to the jig by Denis, you can hear him commenting on it in one of the archive recordings - which I think are part of the Breandán Breathnach tapes - that you can order to listen to at the ITMA. I highly recommend exploring those for anyone into Denis Murphy’s music, whenever it’s possible to visit with all the lockdowns etc. I don’t think they’re readily available online.
