Hale’s Rag

Perhaps the best known tune played by Theron Hale, a banjo and fiddle player of the 20’s and 30’s. It is based on a composition by Charles Johnson. Like most rags, it is not meant to played very fast, and the tempo should have considerable swing to it. It likely isn’t a typical barn dance, but this is best category here I could find to submit it under.

I would have emailed you but find that sometimes the email via the site can do strange things with, for example, ABCs. This was quick, hoping this reaches you before the ABCs get converted to dots, and the layout in the usual fasion of dots and ABCs, including 4-bar phrases…

Oops! Followed your notes to slavishly ~ you don’t need those rests in the lead-in ~

I like it! Is there any more information on it you can offer up? Is the Theron Hale recording still in circulation?

It’s also a nice one to dance to… ;-)

Hale’s Rag

I thank the fixer of my errors on the notation. I am a newbie! The Theron Hale and daughters recording may be available from the Smithsonian. John McCutcheon did record it on his album "Fine Times at our House". (it is from this that I "learned" it)

It’s track 14 on the album I linked to.

A very interesting recording Weejie, thanks for the link…

ABCs still need editing ~

Thanks for the other source Dulcimisty, but you still need to edit your ABCs ~ which, by the way this site works, only you can do.
You could just cut and paste the last entry I’d made, minus these headers ~

Editing changes

thanks to 11075. I made the changes you suggested. I think I still have a long way to go in learning ABC. Your support is really appreciated. wrt the tune: I love it and am happiest when playing it with a good bass player. Then there is not ornamentation required.

Damn, I’m a number, but not another dyslexic? ;-)

It probably won’t make a difference, hopefully, but you might want to get rid of the space between K: & the ABCs:
