Billy Barlow

I play this one after "When drunk, is it tea you want?" because it seems to follow very smoothly with the key change from D to A.

It’s also a good to do some stop dead/re-starting at certain points in the tune.

Billy Barlow

Shows up in the Complete Preceptor for the Banjo By Gumbo Chaff © 1851 Oliver Diston, Boston. I’ve seen sheet music with lyrics I believe from the 1840’s I’ll have to look for that.

That’d be great Boots, can you also add a transcription from "The Complete Preceptor for th Banjo"? That’s one I haven’t go. 😀

~ I haven’t ‘got’…

I’ve still got this borrowed cheap keyboard and it and my fingers do not get along perfectly… 😛

Gumbo Chaff

Gumbo Chaff and his preceptor… What a great name! Thanks For the links Boots. I never knew there were lyrics. I definitely felt the tune had a comic feel to it though.

Gumbo Chaff

Oh dear. I was thinking it would be a great name for a band, Gumbo Chaff and the Preceptors… But having done a bit of Wikipedia research looks like I’d better abandon that idea pretty quickly as it turns out it’s a bit racist.

"Billy Barlow" ~ 1851

Wild! That brings back memories. I used to set type like that.
