surprised more folks haven’t added this. Is this a duplicate?

Re: Baitheadh Bhrioclais

I just found Carbray’s Frolics ( https://thesession.org/tunes/8024 ), via reading through O’Neill’s 1001 (where it is #407). With the exception of one pair of bars (the first / fifth bar of the B section) these tunes are basically identical. I move to merge this one into that one.

Re: Baitheadh Bhrioclais

Sorry, completely disagree with you on this, Ian Varley - Carbray’s Frolics as listed here on thesession is not remotely the same tune as this one. Are you maybe thinking of a different tune Ian?

Kitty Sheain’s

I got this tune from John Doyle, shortly after it was recorded on the excellent 2019 album, Liag, featuring John, Eamonn Coyne, and Dermot Byrne. The name on the album is Kitty Sheain’s, but he mentioned that it might have been composed by Johnny Doherty.

Re: Kitty Sheain’s

Pete, this tune is Bruckless drowning
Paul O’Shaughnessy and Harry Bradley recorded it on their album Born for a Sport together with tune Kelleher’s, 14th set on that album.Anyway, great tune.

Re: Kitty Sheain’s

You are correct, it is the same tune. I will get Jeremy to combine them. Thanks!

Re: Baitheadh Bhrioclais

Does anyone know the actual story/events that this piece refers to? Thanks.

Re: Baitheadh Bhrioclais

From the “Liag” CD sleeve notes : “The Bruckless Drowning”, an old tune recorded from Peadar Johnny Johndai from Teelin in 1947 by Seamus Ennis. The drowning was in 1813 and the storm caused havoc right around the Irish and Scottish coasts".

Baitheadh Bhrioclais, X:5

As played by Caitlín (2012).

“The Drowning at Bruckless is a tune named after the Bruckless Bay drowning in Co.Donegal in 1813. Crews of local fishermen were drowned in a storm. They had been fishing herring on this calm, moonlight night. They were out looking at their nets, the young boys singing and enjoying themselves and the old men smoking. All of a sudden, a great storm arose causing the boats to capsize. Most of the men were drowned in this storm, the greatest drowning that ever happened around the coast of Donegal.”
