The tune is one of John Bradys, Co. Offaly musician and composer of some great tunes.

In Paddy O’Briens record:Stranger at the Gate ?

In the “Details” Folder, this tune is said to be recorded by Paddy O‘Brien on his cd: The Stranger at the Gate". I’mlistening to it at the moment and I don’t find it. It does’nt appear neither in the souds nor in the tracks list.
Is it a mistake? Anybody has a clue?

Answer

The problem, Pierre, is that “Fr. Newman’s” is also known as “John Brady’s”, who composed it. Someone has listed this as an alternative title, and there is no way for the software at the “Session” to differentiate between 2 tunes which have the same name. Paddy O’Brien has indeed recorded a tune with the title “John Brady’s”, but it’s not this one. An unfortunate feature of “The Session”, but we live with it, and it’s no big deal once you are aware of it. If you think this is bad, have a look at “Paddy Fahy’s” !!!

Good thing it was listed properly here!

Setting from John Williams

I’ve been meaning to learn this lovely tune for a long time. My version is from John Williams’s recording Steam. He calls it John Brady’s as well.

Father Newman’s, X:4

Here’s how it’s written in The Brady Collection book (which comes with three CDs), compiled by Adrian and Attracta Brady with a biography. They add the following note on p. 79:

‘Composed in 1970. Lawrence Newman was the curate of Killeigh parish between 1969 and 1972. He was president of Killeigh’s Comhaltas during that time.’

There are a couple of errors in the way the leading notes and repeat bar values don’t add up but I transcribed it exactly as it appears on the page.

Gan Anim

I found this in some old manuscript. I noted it down from Alan Doherty in 2000.
Looks like Alan called it John Kelly’s, but it doesn’t show up when I search that title.
Its a handy flute tune.

Anyone ever come across this ?
Thanks
Pat
