Marion MacLean …beautiful

I just found this tune recently and am wondering: is there anyone who can add some history (composer, year written, story about who MM is) etc.?
My breath is taken away by this achingly beautiful tune .

Slow Air

2nd tune from the album “Fits O’ Giggles” by Ally Mackenzie and Colin Melville.

Slow Air

This is “Marion MacLean Of Eoligarry” (which is a slow air) by Colin Melville.
Somehow the name has been dropped in many places on the web, and it is named “Slow Air”.

Transcription not 100% Correct

The overwhelming majority of the initial transcription is correct, but there’s a few minor problems. There are only 15 bars in the first verse, and 31 in the second. Also, the first beat of the bar is skewed in the second verse so the real first beat actually occurs on what the transcription shows as the second beat.

I have made the amends, but as I created by Session account today (to enable me to upload the correction), it appears I can’t add it here.

For a working YouTube video of this tune, have a look at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRL8wqqkDZs which is where I took my corrections from.

If ever my account permits me to upload the corrected version, I’ll do so

Re: Marion MacLean Of Eoligarry

Anyone else hear the similarity to the song “Jock Stewart”?

Re: Marion MacLean Of Eoligarry

“…stripping it down to the basic melody…”

It really didn’t need that at all, in my opinion.

Re: Marion MacLean Of Eoligarry

well, I suppose it lets people add their own ornamentation on top, Nigel, instead of copying that version.

Re: Marion MacLean Of Eoligarry

Perhaps you could explain the difference between your setting and the others, Shawn L. I honestly can’t see any difference, apart from getting the barlines mixed up in the B part. Anyway, it’s a beautiful tune which I have played many times. Eoligarry is a small settlement on the Isle of Barra.
