Viva la Altan

here’s my first submission in ABC, hope I haven’t totally botched it. Coming soon, the Glory Reel.

James Kelly does a really lovely setting of this one on his perhaps less than creatively named “Traditional Irish Music” -- it’s on the first track along with a Gan Ainm and Lads of Laois and has been on my list of tunes to learn for quite some time. At some point, I’ll try and transcribe the Kelly setting and post it here.

Well, here it is, such as it is -- I’m still not real great at the whole ABC thing. Plus, of course, trying to transcribe James Kelly’s settings is trying to hit a moving target -- possible, but there’s always something else he’s doing that you just can’t quite catch…

Reel before the heathery cruach on ceol aduaidh

Does anyone know what the unnamed reel is that is with the heathery cruach on ceol aduaidh? (the one that opens the set)

Probably more of Altan in this version

OOps! Missed out on putting in the “2” for the second repeats

The1st part is gorgeous on the pipes (with the drones on), the 2nd one offers a nice contrast.

The Heathery Cruach, X:4

This is a version based on Cathal Hayden’s playing that I got from fiddler Ross Couper. In the video above Cathal sometimes plays a D triplet instead of DA,D in the first bar. Whistle/pipes/flute can play the triplet or just the A, up an octave.

Re: The Heathery Cruach

Absolutely love John Doherty’s version of this on “Bundle and Go”.. It’s slightly different though. A lot of the A’s are G’s in his version which lends it a different feel.
