Swedish Polska

Here’s a tune I got from the Spreefix album from Fullsceilidh Spelemannslag. I believe this is a Swedish tune, not sure who’s written it or if it’s trad, but it’s a fantastic wee tune.

It’s normal to transcribe polskor in 3/4. This one is so much associated with Stensele (in Västerbotten) that it’s known as "Stensele polskan" (The Stensele Polska) to many people. Here is a version from the playing of Sören Johansson from Dorotea (about 60 miles south of Stensele):

Further research shows that this tune was composed by Johan August Andersson (1860 or 1866 -1907). He was born on Mörkö in Sörmland, but moved to Dorotea, where he was a teacher, cantor and fiddler. The title is usually written as a compound "Stenselepolskan". It was originally called "Polska från Dorotea" (Polska from Dorotea) and had a variation in the second part, where there was a shift of metre:

Re: Stenselepolskan

An arrangement for fiddle ensemble (2 fiddle lines, cello, and chords) is available in Weaver MacFarlane’s Choon Book, a free download from cracklingsmarts.com.

Audio file of this arrangement is available on Soundcloud (just search for Weaver MacFarlane).

Re: Stenselepolskan

Hi Graeme, that sounds a bit like a church organ that you’re playing this tune on.

I had to have another wee go at mixing this Swedish Polska track, as I wasn’t happy with the balance.

Played it on my Nyckelharpa, English Concertina, Mandolin & Hammered Dulcimer.
