Scott Skinner’s Compliments To Dr. MacDonald
A march composed by J. Scott Skinner from the Logie Collection. This is the melody line transcribed (minus grace notes) from the University of Aberdeen Skinner pages at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/scottskinner/display.php?ID=JSS0799 . It looks like a lot of dots, but played at a medium pace it’s not a tough tune at all, and a really joyful piece. One of our fiddlers shared it at a Scottish session at Sheridan’s Pub in Rochester (NY) a couple of months ago.
This is not how the tune is now played. Scott Skinner published at least two versions of this tune and the one universally played in sessions in Scotland is actually a later version from "The Scottish Violinist" of 1900. I presume this is also the version that Scott Skinner preferred. The relevant page from the collection can be seen at http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_page.jsp?item_id=41313
Re: Wrong Version
Thanks, Niall! I replaced the ABC in my initial submission with a transcription of that Scottish Violinist version, and added the manuscript version as an alternate setting.
