A popular song on the Isle of Man. The title means Little Mannanan, Son of Leir. Mannanan is considered the god and protector of the Isle of Man, and he is also found in Irish mythology. The lyrics are:
Manannan Beg Mac y Leir, Manannan Beg Mac y Leir,
Bannee orrin as nyn maateyn, Manannan Beg Mac y Leir.
Mie goll magh as ny share çheet stiagh, Manannan Beg Mac y Leir.
Lesh ny bioee as ny merriu ayn-jee, Manannan Beg Mac y Leir.
The song asks for Mannanan’s protection on the fishing boats.
A pagan incantation, great stuff manxygirl! I know the hymn from literature, but here we have the dots, how cool’s that????
Is that in Irish literature?
Little Mannanan, son of Leir, little Mannanan, son of Leir,
Bless us and our boats, little Mannanan, son of Leir,
Good going out and better coming in, little Mannanan, son of Leir,
With the living and the dead in them, little Mannanan, son of Leir.

Thanks so much for posting it!
This is nice clip of the lads teaching a lovely setting of the tune. Maybe someone more savvy than I can put it up here as an alternate setting?
Doesn’t sound like the same tune to me …
BTW, I’ve sessioned with Tom - the lad’s a totally brilliant fiddler. A real star. Lovely young fella, too.
Ben, had the same thought. I could be wrong~ just a quick YT search and found this. Met a mandolin/’zouk player from the Isle of Man my last trip to Ireland, and he was a brill player with some nice tunes from home to boot.
Yep you’re right @ Ben Hall - that’s another Manx piece called Manannan’s Song, not an alternative setting. Easy to get confused with the titles though!
Barrule did a series of concerts and workshops around schools on the Island earlier this year, and this was recorded at the school I used to teach at.
Tom is a good lad - keep an eye out for his solo CD, which should be coming out fairly soon.
Sorry ’bout that. Quickly realized the difference after the “edit” option had ended.
manxygirl, I don’t think we have Manannan’s Song listed on this site. That’s nice litte tune! 😉
I’ll get it posted when I get chance! Glad you like it.
*a* nice little tune…sheesh, sleep deprivation getting to me..
Thanks for doing that manxygirl. 😉
