Hebrew traditional dance that’s become quite popular at my local seisiún!
The title translates as ‘Ancient Melody’. However, it was composed in the 50s by Amitai Ne’eman, along with dance steps and lyrics
as part of the Israeli folk dance movement, following the founding of the modern state of Israel. The dance and tune certainly draw on traditional forms and styles, but are more part of an attempt to establish a new tradition than truly part of an old one.
Be that as it may, it’s a very nice tune.
I have the last couple of bars like this: | AB cA BcB^G | A8|
I play this piece at my local gefilte feis.
I find it interesting how the Session entry on Google search describes this a traditional Irish barndance. I never came across it in any Irish session I’ve been to. I assume it is a typo, meant to say Israeli, ot even Klezmer.
