Paddy’s trip to Scoland
Paddy’s trip to Scotland is the first tune of the Donegal set
(Dervish: The Boys of Sligo). It can be heard too on
Altan: Horse with a Heart
Altan’s Version
I like Dervish’s setting you’ve given, Paul, and will work that up for my own playing. On their Live cd, Altan does a different—more Donegal—setting, with a distinctly different B part, as follows:
T: Paddy’s Trip to Scotland
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
D: Altan Live
K: D maj

This is a great way to compare two very different stylistic approaches to the same tune—the Dervish "Sligo" approach, which uses more linear melodic phrases, and Altan’s Donegal style, carrying the punchy arpeggiated phrases of the B part into the next measure, and sprinkling in a few more bowed triplets.
I didn’t even know I was looking for this one.
It pays to check out all the new additions. I have enjoyed this tunes for years but I never got around to it. Thanks for the posts.
Thank you. X marks the spot. So long as it’s not the last field before the score. Putting it last seemed to give me a blank image.
Sorry, that comment was meant for a discussion, but it goes here just as well because my question was why can’t I paste that ABC into concertina.net without an error. The answer is to add X: 1 to the ABC.

This tune is SO an encore; streaming endlessly…
Reminds me of the Fairy Reel / Fairy Dance -respectively;

Useful
the last but one bar of the 2nd part makes good flute practice (octave jump on string of a’s)
The highest notes in the first part are; d, e and f, in that order.
Noticing this feature helped me remember the tune better, (I tended to leave bits behind)
Notice how the tonal anchor, the key note, is not the bottom D but the high d. The tune extends a 6th under and a 5th over this note.
Pipes Version of Paddy’s Trip to Scotland McKerrell
Hi all,
had fun with this tune and always wanted to play it on Highland pipes so I’ve arranged it as a six parter for Highland pipes—hopefully someone will enjoy having a go at it!
all the best,
Simon McKerrell.
extra half-beat in setting #2
The 6th measure of the B part of setting #2 has an extra eighth note in it… 4 1/2 beats total in the measure.
Rather than the written Adfd d/e/dc B^g-, I take out the c and play it Adfd d/e/d B^g-.
