Huish The Cat

Piper Sean Folsom and fiddler Cathie Whitesides recorded this on their group Sheila na Gig’s “Holy Well” LP in the 1980s. Sean obtained the tune from piper Denis Brooks, who apparently obtained it from either the Petrie or Joyce collections; there is a similar jig in Petrie, Foxy Mary, but the 2nd part is different; perhaps Denis composed the 2nd part on his own. Whatever the case it is a fine piping jig, very old fashioned in its one octave, and apparently has made the rounds a bit, as I have a mid 90s recording of famed Dublin piper Mick O’Brien playing it.

Other Cats being Hu(i)shed are in various books, the old jig usually called as such is more akin to Bímíd ag Ól.

Huish The Cat, a single Jig in one Octave

Kevin is partially right, I did hear Irish Piper Dennis Brooks playing a different version of this Jig known as “Foxy Mary” which has a different “B” part and can be found in some other Irish Music collections, & is not written in whole, or in part, by Dennis Brooks. My version came from the Roche Collection, which at the time I started playing the tune in 1975, I found in a photocopy of the original Tune Books, that were in 3 volumes. The Roche Collection reprint, has been available for some time now, so have a look at it if You like this Tune. As for the Recording here, off of the Sheila na Gig album “Holy Well” (1985) this rendition on You Tube, has the Gain up to high, so it is distorted. I have asked my friend who put it up on my “Channel” to fix it, but to no avail. The Second Tune I segue into is “The Rakes of West Meath” in 9/8 time, which I found in O’Neill’s 1001 Tunes (1907).

Hunt A Cat

Learned from Sile Friel at a workshop. She is a great piper, a good teacher a very nice person!
They found it in the Roche Collection .
I’m not sure abou the mode, I think it is Ddorian which is not on the menu here…..

Re: Hunt The Cat

First basic version, 2nd round some possible variations especially for pipers

Re: Hunt The Cat

The tune uses a gapped modal scale, D E G A B C. It can be interpreted by an accompanist as either D Mixolydian or D Dorian, since there are neither F#s nor Fnats in it at all.

I tend more towards hearing it as Mixolydian, since the conventional regulators layout has an F# instead of an Fnat and I would play it in that manner.

Of course, if you play just the chanter and drones with a guitarist or bouzouki player accompanying, he or she may do as she wishes with regard to the DDorian vs Dmix question, and it would sound good either way.

Re: Huish The Cat

Apologies, I got my semiquavers and my demisemiquavers mixed up in the ABC notation for the setting I posted. Since corrected in the ABC but the sheet music still has the error.
