This one starts off the Eb reels on the Flatfish album, followed up by the West Clare reel and Lexy McAskill’s.

“Blink” / “Tuatha De Danann” ~ a rescued duplication with interest

Why? some might ask. Well, I am always intrigued by differences, including in how we listen, what we percieve through that sense, and I quite enjoyed the 3-3-2 perception that the contributor had on this, and their very different transcription, as compared to what is already here. I also gave it a Balkan treatment and enjoyed that, if slightly different note wise. So, for others to check it out, and not meant to embarrass the contributor, here it is…

Notes ~ # Posted on August 4th 2008

Hi, this is my transcription of "Tuatha De Danann", a tune performed by the Flook band, which you can hear on the "Excalibur II" CD. Which means this is NOT a reel, but the site would not let me enter anything else. The beat is 3 + 3 + 2 ( = 8 ).

The original tune is played on a Eb whistle, so it should be F dorian, but I wrote it there in E dorian so that it is easily readable, just read & play it on a Eb whistle like if you were holding a D whistle in your hands.

There’s some mistakes for sure in there, and plenty of ornementations to insert. The tempo is quite fast; if you play in ( 1/16 ) it’s something like 123.

Hope you enjoy.

Do you mean this tune (the first one):

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=x7s7qEL0KlM&feature=related ?

If so (and I think you do), then it’s definitely a reel, albeit cool and syncopated and everything, and it’s already up here as Lough Mountain (this original transcription)

Duplicated and misnamed ~ You’re right, Joe. This is definitely a reel, and someone has already posted a better transcription of it. And I doubt "Tuatha Dé Danann" is the correct title of the tune. Possibly the title of the track on which they play? Flook actually recorded the tune as "Blink" on their album "Flatfish":

Indeed, you’re correct, that’s the tune I meant. Sorry, I only heard it on a CD were it was named "Tuatha Dé Danann" ~

3rd song, sorry it’s a french page. Anyway thank you for the link, the correct name and the more proper transcription…

Is this a Trad tune as such or a Finnegan/Flook composition? Having been out playin choons on Sat discovered an annoying habit of learning new compositions recently.

and i agree with the previous poster. This choon is entoxicating. The Eb reel set in general

Trad ?

This was recorded by the Co.Clare group "Fisherstreet" in 1991. "Flatfish" came out in 1999. Suggests to me that it is a traditional tune - I’ll check the "Fisherstreet" recording credits - and not a "Flook/Finnegan" original.

Trad ?

Listed on the "Fisherstreet" cassette insert as "Trad", but then compositions by Ed Reavy, Paddy O’Brien and Paddy Fahy, are also listed as "Trad", with no credits to composers. Really annoys me, that does.

Lough Mountain

Yes, that annoys me too. Reavy and co should not be taken for granted. This tune is down as trad on the Flook album but strangely they’ve named it ‘Blink’.

According the the Fiddler’s Companion,

"Loughmountain" is the name given in Treoir and the composer as being Eddie O’Donnell. Anyone have any more information?

It’s a superb tune, cracking beginning to it.

Regards
David

Blink, X:4

This is a nice setting from Eoin O’Niell’s In Session recording entitled, "Lough Mountain". Not terribly different but I think nice enough to include since I was learning it anyway,
