Thirteen comments

Three little errors in the 1st setting: FDD in the 2nd and 5th lines and FDA in the 4th line should all be FAD. They are played FAD both in the video by Edel and by Lorna Davey on the live CD issued by the Corrofin Festival.

`Gary-4.th and 5th lines yes, 2nd line no. On the video they are playing FDD on that second half of the first part

Setting from Lorna Davey’s playing in Corofin

Hi guys, 5stringfool’s notation comes close to what I hear Lorna plays on the Corofin recording. Thanks for posting it. It saved me the work of having to type everything from scratch. Still, I think there are a few notes she plays differently. Therefore I posted this third setting.

Guess both other settings are transcribed from Edel’s playing? Great to have those as well. But as this tune is Lorna Davey’s composition, she deserves more than anybody else to have her (original) version here as well.

Maybe update the first version ?

Otherwise it will lead to confusion when downloaded. Just saying….

update

I think you’ll find I did that quite a while ago

Setting from Lorna Davey’s playing in Corofin

Thanks, Thierry. I slowed down the Corofin recording and moved it down to D from E flat to check your transcription. She never actually plays FAA in the third bar of lines 1, 2, and 5. She almost always plays FAD there. The two exceptions are the third bar of the first time through the A part on the second and third times she plays the tune, where she plays FFD ccA instead of FAD cAA. Also, it’s a low D, not a high d in the 3rd bar of the 1st ending to the B part.

There are just a few variations. The second and third times through the tune, she varies the 6th bar of the B part (1st ending), playing bag fdA instead of bag afd. The third time through, she:
1) uses dag instead of d2e as the pickup leading into the repeat of the B part; and
2) ends the tune with AGE D3 instead of Ad^c d2.

I’ll post a complete transcription below.

Great stuff Gary. I only transcribed the first time she plays it. Just to keep it simple. I’m sure there are people out there who want to play all the different little ‘variations’ in the tune too 🙂 Said that, you’re right about the D in stead of the A in the third bar of the first line. Missed that.

I corrected it in my ABC. Thanks again.

Lorna Davey’s original composition

Lorna Davey was so kind to sent me the tune as she originally composed it. I added it (without the variations) as the fifth setting here. Lorna in her own words: “every musician will put their own slant on it and use their own variations. They don’t need to play it exactly as it was written”.

Here is it how she sent it to me:

Jig: The Hill of Bruff ~ (composed by Lorna Davey-Fitzgerald).

1st part:
|fag efd|cAG EFG|FAD cAA|dAG EFA| fag efd|cAG EFG|FAD cAG|Ad^c d_e:||
Simple varitaion for 1st part - |fag efd|cAG EFG|F2D c2A|dAG EFA| fag efd|cAG EFG|FAD cAG|Ad^c d_e:||
(The variation is a long F and long c, with a grace note just before the timing of the second note is played, grace note before the F is B and before the c is e).
2nd part:
|fdd add|bag afd|FAd faf|ged ^cag| fdd add|bag afd|FAD cAG|Ad^c d2e|
2nd part repeated:
|fdd add|bag afd|FAd faf|ged ^cag|fag efd|cAG EFG|FAD cAG|*Ad^c d2e:|| [to end the tune *AGE D3||]

There is no difference between transcription 3 and 5, but I can’t delete one of them. Sorry about that.
