This tune is played in sessions in my area (Bristol UK), and someone kindly gave me a transcription some months ago. I believe it was composed by Brendan O’Regan. I think this tune is one of those reels that benefits from not being played too fast.
trevor
this is played before Heaton Chapel at sessions.Lunasa play them together.
Of Guitar interest
If you want to play this the way Donogh Hennessy plays it with Lunasa on the guitar, he capos the guitar on the 7th fret and then plays it in double dropped D. It is actually easier to play in just plain (single) dropped D. Bear in mind that not all guitars sound all that great when capo’d up that high.
Cheers
Autumn Child - Last Night’s Fun version
Trevor J says ‘I think this tune is one of those reels that benefits from not being played too fast.’ - quite right - do listen to the version on Last Night’s Fun’s CD "Tempered" where it’s taken REALLY slowly, to great effect
Does anyone know the version of this that is on the album "Spirit" by Dervish?
This tune is the one I chose for my first sessionable appearances with the low A Alba whistle. It works well, covering the whole range of the tune and with a nice tone and the others don’t need to transpose from the key they are used to playing it in.
Autumn Child
Here’s a nice take on this, being played on the bouzouki and harmonica:
That’s a nice whistle-friendly setting there, JACKB.
Looks like he actually just took Trevor’s original setting and removed the commas. 😏
A pity he hardly bothers to comment on his submissions and quote his sources.
Sebastian, nobody is obligated to comment when submitting a setting of a tune. I’d prefer it if they did, but I’d much rather that somebody submits a setting without a comment than not submit a setting at all.
If somebody has gone to the trouble of submitting a setting, please don’t give them a hard time—especially not in a public comment; that’s just going to put others off submitting their own settings. Thanks.
Peat In The Creel video
This tune was written by a fellow named Brendan O’Regan - great guy! Here is a video of my band playing it a few years ago (recorded with his permission). He has a myspace page with some other examples of his tunes. Check it out: https://myspace.com/oregan3
