Catherine Ogie

A rare find, a beautiful O’Çarolan piece, I just love it, can’t stop playing it. Played slow but with spirit.

Catherine Ogie: not by O’Carolan

According to tunearch.org, this tune – which is also titled Katharine Ogie, Katharine Oggy, Catherine Logie, Katherine Loggy, Lady Catherine Ogle, Ketrin Ogie, Bonny Katherine Oggy – is a Scots one and may have been composed by Rory dall O’Cahan (http://tunearch.org/w121/index.php?title=Katharine_Oggle&oldid=164047). It was published around 1746 in McGibbon’s Scots Tunes, book II, p. 44.
On the other hand, I carefully checked the content of Donal O’Sullivan’s “Carolan - The Life Times and Music of an Irish Harper” (Cork, 2001), which doesn’t include this tune whatever its title and/or key is.
Therefore, Catherine Ogie is definitely not by O’Carolan (sorry about his, JACKB).

Re: Catherine Ogie

Robert Burns used this for his 1792 song "Highland Mary", calling the air "Katharine Ogie" (Kinsey 389, p.526). Definitely a slow air there, though it will play well at march speed too.
