This tune is MacPherson’s Rant, a traditional reel. The other tune by this name is really MacPherson’s Lament and should be renamed, IMHO.
Can you tell us where you got the tune, piprgrl?
I can’t recall where I first laid my hands on it, though Jim McGillivray has it on his pipetunes.ca site. It is on a couple of videos on YouTube played and identified as Macpherson’s Reel.
Hey. Nigel, I thought I would share this since you were interested in the origins of the tune.
Just now as I was listening to Gordon Duncan’s album "Just for Seamus," I stopped in my tracks when I heard this tune. So I pulled out the album notes to see if there is anything enlightening. It is in the set "The Last Tango in Harris / The Ballinvanich Reel / McPherson’s / Good Drying. " But the notes just say McPherson’s - Reel, Traditional.
Thanks for that, piprgrl - I always like to know where tunes come from. I recognise this tune, but I can’t quite place it. I’ll keep trying…
