Abe’s Retreat

From Gavin Whelan’s ‘In Full Flight’.

Abe’s Retreat, X:2

One of my favorite Old-Time tunes of all time. This is the version that I learned and play. Great for mandolin and fiddle. If you play this on tenor banjo, and wonder why the clawhammer banjo recordings sound better, it’s probably cause you are picking too close to the bridge; move your hand up higher for those Old-Time tunes, or learn to play 5-string clawhammer and buy a new banjo.
When played SLOWLY, this tune is amazing. Use lots of hammer-ons and slides when you feel like it, cause why not!?
