Whiskey, You’re The Devil

This is a traditional Irish song. I first heard it as sung by the Clancy Brothers.

Lyrics:

Whiskey, you’re the devil, you’re leadin’ me astray
Over hills and mountains and to Americae
You’re sweeter, stronger, decenter, you’re spunkier than tae
O whiskey, you’re my darlin’ drunk or sober

Oh, now, brave boys, we’re on the march and off to Portugal and Spain
The drums are beating, banners flying, the devil ahome will come tonight
Love, fare thee well, with me tithery eye the doodelum the da
Me tithery eye the doodelum the da, Me rikes fall tour a laddie oh
There’s whiskey in the jar. Hey!

Whiskey, you’re the devil, you’re leadin’ me astray
Over hills and mountains and to Americae
You’re sweeter, stronger, decenter, you’re spunkier than tae
O whiskey, you’re my darlin’ drunk or sober

Said the mother: "Do not wrong me, don’t take my daughter from me
For if you do I will torment you, and after death a ghost will haunt you
Love, fare thee well, with me tithery eye the doodelum the da
Me tithery eye the doodelum the da, Me rikes fall tour a laddie oh
There’s whiskey in the jar. Hey!

Whiskey, you’re the devil, you’re leadin’ me astray
Over hills and mountains and to Americae
You’re sweeter, stronger, decenter, you’re spunkier than tae
O whiskey, you’re my darlin’ drunk or sober

The French are fighting boldly, men dying hot and coldly
Gives ev’ry man his flask of powder, his farlock on his shoulder
Love, fare thee well, with me tithery eye the doodelum the da
Me tithery eye the doodelum the da, Me rikes fall tour a laddie oh
There’s whiskey in the jar. Hey!

Whiskey, you’re the devil, you’re leadin’ me astray
Over hills and mountains and to Americae
You’re sweeter, stronger, decenter, you’re spunkier than tae
O whiskey, you’re my darlin’ drunk or sober

Polka

Also, I do not believe it is a polka, but I’m not sure what tune type it is as the notation I created is in 2/4 time.

Re: Whiskey, You’re The Devil

Obviously, not a polka, but a strathspey.

Re: Whiskey, You’re The Devil

Why is it obviously a Strathspey?

I would classify it as a song air.

Re: Whiskey, You’re The Devil

….. and an Irish song air at that. “WhiskEy”.

Re: Whiskey, You’re The Devil

You’re right.

Re: Whiskey, You’re The Devil

Thread drift, but one of Robin Laing’s many whisky (Scottish!) songs has the chorus starting with:
“Whisky, you’re the devil in disguise” - listed as first track on his “Angel’s Share” album, but under the title “More than just a dram”. Good song, totally different tune from the above, but worth looking up, tho’ it’s “not available” now on YouTube. You can hear a snippet from it on iTunes, and the lyrics and other info are here:

Re: Whiskey, You’re The Devil

Song air yes, More likely a march in original form. It does more or less work as a polka, though a bit irregular in the tithery idle tooddle um a dar section.

Re: Whiskey, You’re The Devil

Are X:1 and X:2 really the same tune…?

Besides, in X:1 the number of bars does not seem to fit.

X:2 is #1639 in O‘Neill’s 1850, and #866 is O’Neilll’s 1001, classified as hornpipe.
