Evening Prayer Blues

This is an attempt at putting Kevin Burke’s version of Evening Prayer Blues into abc format. I understand the rhythm of the tune but can’t understand the overall structure. The tune plays fine in the Tunebook app. However the musical notation doesn’t look right. Any help would be appreciated. Gregg

I haven’t heard the tune, so can’t comment on that, but the only issues you have are line breaks (most ABC typesetters will break the line of music at the linebreaks, so something like this would look neater:

|G3D GABc|c-d4d3|d4 cBcd|cB G3G Bc|
dg2g2b gd|cBGD CB,G,GBGcB G4-|GD ED:|
G3D GABc|dcBG DCB,G,|BG cG c-d2d-|dcBG DCB,G,|
BdcB G3d-|dcBG DCB,G,|BGcG BGcd-|dcBG DCB,G,|
BdcB G4-|GDED||

Secondly, when writing 2/2 or 4/4 time signatures, there should be a visual break between the two halves of the bar - you should write G3 G- G4 instead of G3 G4- G, for example. So your setting should be written:

|G3D GABc|c-d3- d d3|d4 cBcd|cB G2- GGBc|
dg2g- gbgd|cBGD CB,G,GBGcB G4-|GD ED:|
G3D GABc|dcBG DCB,G,|BG cG c-d2d-|dcBG DCB,G,|
BdcB G3d-|dcBG DCB,G,|BGcG BGcd-|dcBG DCB,G,|
BdcB G4-|GDED||

Note also that abcd will all be beamed together whereas ab cd will be beamed as two seperate groups. Normally you’d want to beam them all together but sometimes it can make a musical point clearer to beam them seperately.

Line breaks

Thank you Calum. That helps.
I will fix my abc later to get the lines more sensibly displayed.

Can’t help with the transcription, but that is one of the best Bill Monroe tunes EVER. Predates him of course but his version is great. My favorite version though is J.P Cormier on mandolin…… really powerful, fast, driving version that just kills. Good for Kevin Burke for having a crack at it.

Evening Prayer Blues

I’ve played this tune, and heard it on a recording that I can’t remember the name of right now. Here’s with the transcription: the tune actually starts on the second measure, the last three notes in the first measure being the pickups. The same with the B-part.

this tune was originally recorded on harmonica by deFord Bailey on the Grand Old Opry - I think he may have composed it .
He was the first and possibly the only African American musician on this white hillbilly show - I knew there
had to be a link somewhere between country blues and ITM………………..

Ok I’ll try again. Is this better?

Evening Prayer Blues, X:3

This is my arrangement of the tune that I use for my flute taken originally from a bluegrass mandolin tab. I agree that this piece isn’t Irish music but it’s great stuff all the same, and Bill Monroe was a great American composer and musician. This arrangement will require a flute with keys due to the chromatic notes, but a fiddle shouldn’t have much problem.
