The Maids Of Islay

Picked up from David Greenburg and Doug MacPhee’s ‘Tunes Until Dawn’ album. This tune starts a set with David’s wife, Kate Dunlay, on fiddle and David on pump organ. Notes say that before the piano was common in Cape Breton, the Victorian era parlor or pump organ was used to accompany the devil’s box. It gives a rich drony sound a bit like fiddle and box.

Tune appears in the Athole Collection as well as Alexander MacKay (of Islay) c.1805, Anderson’s c. 1790 and the many Gow collections.
