The Banks Of Spey

A William Marshall strathspey. Notation from S. Johnson (A Twenty Year Anniversary Collection), 2003; pg. 33. Randy Miller (William Marshal’s Scottish Melodies), Second Edition, 2007; 1822 Collection, pg. 44.

The Banks Of Spey

Just for interest, there are three different tunes called "The Banks of Spey" which has led to some confusion over the years. In Niel Gow’s Complete Repository (vol.4), for example, one of the other tunes is given with "by Mr Marshall" beside it. The earliest published tune under the name "Banks of Spey" is in McGibbon’s Collection of 1742, a lovely slow air. Again, the name caused confusion in Hamilton’s Universal Collection (1844), where Marshall’s tune is printed, but the notes say "This air appears in both McGibbon’s and Oswald’s collections…” It should rather have said, in thesession.org parlance, "A tune BY THIS NAME appears…"
