This is my new favorite. I’m going to try to learn this so that people in my local session will start playing it.

It was also recorded on Ireland : Crossroads of Art and Design. This recording’s to be found on The Session
under “Liz Carroll” (who composed some of the tunes), other artists involved as in the comment there. Warmly
recommended.

Re: It Was A Magic Mist That Put Me Astray One Night

Sorry, in the recording Ireland : Crossroads … the tune has the title "[It was] a magic mist that came over me
one night and put me astray"

It Was A Magic Mist That Put Me Astray One Night, X:4

I may get rotten vegetables thrown at me for this but I think this meter helps inform the phrasing and makes the tune sound like how Mick O’brien interprets it. My instinct when I heard it was that the ascending 16ths and 8ths were pickups but I could not work out the meter so, I wrote it down on manuscript and started dotting in the bar lines. Low and behold, this works out to a complex meter, 4/4 + 5/4 (or 9/4 - I like the former). I know that this is unconventional but I don’t think it works as a waltz or a 4/4 tune. Unfortunately I could not find a way to change the meter within the abc box so you have the default 3/4 marking though the bars alternate 4/4 and 5/4 as explained. I wrote this out in Finale but I’m not sure how to add an image other than a sharing site and I just don’t want to hassle with it. I’ll send it to anyone if you’re interested.

Also…if anyone has a copy of the Goodman Manuscripts where this tune came from I would love an image of it to see how it is written there. Eventually I will buy the books. Oh, and if anyone has a way of positioning breath mark correctly I’d be obliged for the help.

Re: It Was A Magic Mist That Put Me Astray One Night

Someone more knowledgeable please correct me, but this air seems to be the setting for a poem from the 18th century in Irish by Owen Roe O’Sullivan from which the tune takes it’s title.

That might account for the unusual scan and phrasing…Owen Roe is sometimes referred to as the last great Gaelic Poet.

I haven’t been able to track down the poem either in Irish or a translation, but if anyone knows of either, please point me in that direction.
