The tune’s in A mixolydian (two sharps, resolves on A). For myself, I’d prefer G sharps in there as well, which would make it A major.

Thanks! I changed it to Amix.

Re: An Eala Bhan

Is this the origanal version of this tune? I need to know ASAP

An Eala Bhan, X:2

Hear the Manran version and was figuring out how to play it in C (Am) on a concertina. Seems there is a missing high F on a 20 button though…

Re: An Eala Bhan

Not sure what the original is in this case. I’ve seen it listed in GHB notation in A in Irish pipe band collections. It sounds similar in some respects to the melody as played/sung by Julie Fowlis with the words in Scottish Gaelic, and I think her version is up a whole step in B major/mix. Whether the tune was adapted to suit the words, I have yet to ascertain. Anyways, Julie has done a beautiful job with it.

An Eala Bhan, X:3

What a beautiful tune! I’ve made a couple of minor adjustments to the notation of X:2, the Mànran version. I know it’s been said before, but I wish there were a way to enter a slow air in 6/8 as something other than a jig, or include a Q field in the abc to set a tempo. Q:80 feels about right…

Re: An Eala Bhan

As sung by Julie Fowlis is the original. The first setting given here is an adaptation for pipes.

Re: An Eala Bhan

Donald MacDonald of North Uist wrote it at the Somme for his sweatheart back home. The title translates as "The White Swan"
