Trip To Cottingham

A tune that I heard played in a session at the Bampton Folk Festival (Devon, England) a couple of weeks ago.

Cottingham is a village in Yorkshire, England - but it’s also a village in Nottinghamshire, England.

Which Cottingham does it refer to, I wonder?

Australian accordionist Sally Sloane

This tune was introduced to the English Session community as Sally Sloane’s (barndance) , it is still probably better known as such. Comes from the playing of old Australian accordionist Sally Sloane and was published in "Hardcore English" as such. Someone recognised its’ similarities to the Trip to Cottingham in "Lawrence Leadley - The Fiddler of Helperby , The life and Music of a Yorkshire Fiddler" pub. from his manuscripts. It has ‘evolved’ significantly on it’s australian migration, the Bpart in particular has developed from rather tedious repeative phrases into a decent melody.
There are recordings of Sally on the National Library of Australia website, but I couldn’t find this tune when looked some years ago

Fun to play those G3 E2 F measures as G2 E-E F2 occasionally.

Sally Sloane’s Barn Dance

A tune that’s played at one of my local sessions.

(NOT the same as another tune called Sally Sloane’s that’s already posted to session.org)

For those of you who play in ceildh/barn dance bands, it’s a useful tune to incude in tunesets for 48-bar dances such has the Bridge of Athlone or the Waves of Tory.

Re: Sally Sloane’s Barn Dance

Hi dogbox. Thanks for pointing this out. There seems to be two tunes - possibly related to each other - Trip to Cottingham & Sally Sloane’s Barn Dance - hence my confusion!

Re: Sally Sloane’s Barn Dance

It’s almost definitely the Yorkshire Cottingham; it was quite a posh place to be when the "trip to" tunes were being composed - and it’s in Leadley as well.
