Origin: "Colored Aristocracy" ~ Mudcat discussion

A popular tune for American contra dances, Big Circle, New England Squares/Quadrilles, The Grand March/Promenade, and the Cakewalk… We used to play this one quite a lot…

It’s earliest and most widely known name being "Colored Aristocracy", with the supposedly P.C. version coming in the 20th Century: "Southern Aristocracy"…

‘Late’ 2oth Century…

& ~ old time squares, and running sets…

Another take, courtesy of yours truly. I’ll chase up some others as I know we must have several other transcriptions for this around the house, somewhere, and probably quite a few recordings too, though probably on LPs, and I still haven’t committed to purchasing a new turntable and phono stage. We gave our beloved in-line turntable away to friends. 🙁 I’m still researching the options, with the manufacturers Rega / VPI / Pro-Ject / Clearaudio / Michell / Wilson Benesch / Linn ~ etc., in the running, with a slight favourable lean towards British designs and manufacture… Sigh!? 😉

Minus the swing (>)…

Re: Colored Aristocracy

As I recall this was recorded by the New Lost City Ramblers who got from a West Virginia field recording by Charles Seeger. There is a 19th century cakewalk by this title but, as far as I can tell it has no melodic relationship to this tune.
