O‘Neill’s 1001, tune number 993, which I first heard played by Catherine O’Shea and Lindsay Straw of The Ivy Leaf, who called it “The Jolly Merchant.” In their liner notes, they called out the O‘Neill’s transcription as the source, and the band recording holds fairly tightly to the O’Neill’s version, so that’s what I’ve included here. An alternate title in the book is “Canny Sugach.” It has echoes of a Scottish reel, but I can’t place it.
Correction: Caroline O’Shea, not Catherine.
