Eighth Black Watch On Passchendaele Ridge

A powerful 6/8 pipe march transcribed from the 1982 Tak a Dram Afore Ye Go by the Caithness-based group Mirk, featuring a young Jim Sutherland, later of The Easy Club. On the record sleeve they give “Bremner” as the composer, and I think it’s by an Alexander “Sandy” Bremner from Caithness (the tune appears also to be known as “Bremner’s March”).

The Third Battle of Ypres, known by some as the Battle of Passchendaele, occured between July and November 1917 with about quarter of a million casualties on each side.

I was in the Pitt-Rivers museum in Oxford recently and saw this mandolin that was played by a soldier in World War One. He had written the names of the battles he was in on the side of the instrument (including Ypres, Somme, and Vimy Ridge):

This is really a cracking tune! Thanks for posting.

Amen to that! And anything that Mirk did!
