Out In The Cold
This fantastic jig is by Paddy O’Brien. The notes come from Alan’s Finn’s playing in this video, starting at 1:14:
The tune’s in 3 parts, Alan repeats each part and plays the tune through twice. The notes here are for the first time through with each repeat written out to show the variations he plays.
I had a bit of a hard time finding out anything about the tune (see https://thesession.org/discussions/40871) but after a good internet search and some help from folks on here we were able to confirm that it’s a Paddy O’Brien tune. It’s on page 36 of the book "The Definitive Collection of The Music of Paddy O’Brien 1922 - 1991" compiled by Eileen O’Brien. More about the book here: http://www.paddyobrienbook.com/sample.html .Looks like it’s out of print at the moment.
Out In The Cold, X:2
Correct, actually these jigs appear not only in the book (I have post a setting exactly as it appears in the book, ornamentation and accidentals included), but also in the album ‘Aon le h’Aon’ ( https://thesession.org/recordings/4242 ), recorded by Eileen O’Brien a few years ago with a lovely compilation of his father’s compositions. In that recording ‘Out in the cold’ is followed by the jig ‘Gavin’s Piano’, that I’ve just posted here:
In fact, I had recorded both jigs being played together in two sessions, first at Feakle festival in 2013, and then some months later at the Corofin Festival, but it was only last year or so that I realized about their origin, as I was working a bit more seriosly on the book…
