Miss Stewart Of Garth

A splendid Cape Breton reel in one of my favorite keys. Transcription taken mostly from “The Dances Down Home” by Joe Cormier. Bill Lamey also recorded a driving version which sounds more like D mixolydian due to his tendency to use F-sharps. The two versions differ in other ways as well, and I can see a lot of room for variation with this tune. Often paired with Lieutenant Howard Douglass’s strathspey.

Here is Bill Lamey’s version, with some of his customary double stops included. According to the Traditional Tune Archive, the tune was composed by Duncan McKercher, and there is also a lesser-known strathspey version.
