Re: Terry Teahan’s

Your transcription is off by half a beat. I’ve added a corrected version, plus changed it to G, which is where I’d put it for flute. I also made a few changes based on how I’d play it.

Re: Terry Teahan’s

Where’s the missing half beat in X1? Perhaps I’m just not that sharp right now, but I don’t see it.

Re: Terry Teahan’s

There’s not a missing half beat in X:1, but, as Nico says, it’s off by a half beat in that the first note (d) is a pick up note (anacrusis). The abcs should read: d|c {d}c AG|A/B/c de|…. etc.
It’s a common mistake on this site.

Re: Terry Teahan’s

"It’s a common mistake on this site."

Indeed, but it works the other way around as well. 3/4 retreat marches, where almost all pipe sources notate
" | NN N2 N2 | "
I can’t help changing it to
" NN | N2 N2 "
Who am I to say that pipers got it wrong?

And mazurkas on this site are almost always notated
" NN | N2 N2 "
But the emphasis in a mazurka is on the 2nd or 2nd and 3rd beats in the bar, so they should be notated
" | NN N2 N2 | "

Gotta stand and face it, life is so complicated.

Re: Terry Teahan’s

Regarding retreats, Nigel, I read somewhere that it’s to do with the strike in. The pipers (or those with a little bit of musical knowledge) know the bar lines are in the wrong place but it makes it easier to play written that way.

Re: Terry Teahan’s

I mean, I could maybe make sense of the tune if it were off by a beat… but half a beat is just not too hard for my mind.
