I really love this tune, I heard it somewhere and remembered the name but not much else!!! Thanks to Gian Marco for posting it!!! 🙂

Sergeant Early’s Dream - another setting

Love this tune. My version is fairly different. Mostly the Kathleen Collins version with a bit of Paddy Canny’s and Randal Bay’s settins tossed in for flavor.

Cheers,
Ken

It’s in O’Neil’s in A major, which is a totally different sounding beast, and goes up to the high c#. This is not a pretty note on your average tinwhistle, or fiddle for that matter.

Sergeant Early’s Dream, X:4

O‘Neill’s #656, in A Dorian. I love this tune for the last bar in both the A and B part in particular, which are pretty unique as far as I ’m aware. The high C notes are a bit of a bother though.

Sergeant Early’s Dream, X:5

I’m just learning this beautiful tune and tried to combine some of my favorite aspects of it from different settings. Moving beyond the bare bones of the notes, there’s endless scope for variation and ornamentation here, particularly by sliding into notes to make it even more mournful.

Sergeant Early’s Dream, X:6

A setting with chords and an accompanying part (mine - not authentically traditional). I had the melody line from notation given on the sleeve notes to a Paddy Carty LP.

Sergeant Early’s Dream, X:7

Setting in A Dorian with chords.

I believe this would be the best key for a session. As per the melody line, this is what I am used to play, not sure where I got it. It could be from sessions, or albums, or even a mix of both.
