Flypolska

This is a polska, not a reel. I heard this polska played by Jamie Huddlestone (Fiddle) & Gabi Maas (accordion) in a set: Slängpolska från Småland/Flypolska. Flypolska was composed by the Finnish accordion player Teija Niku. I transcribed it from her playing - it was much clearer than the version played by Huddleston/Maas. It is played fast - quarter note = 200 in my transcription.

Here it is played by Teija Niku

And played by Jamie Huddlestone and Gabi Maas, beginning at 2:05

Re: Flypolska

Couldn’t open the Teija Niku clip (‘video not available’) but the Huddlestone/Maas playing was a delight! V. tasteful arrangement. Swedish tune titles are possibly even more subject to variation than the Irish, and I’d come across the first piece in their set under another name but can’t recall what it was, so can’t look it up. Frustrating!

The second tune is equally splendid, but I think the transcription into 4/4 may be a tad erroneous (unless the Niku playing from which it’s taken is essentially different from H/M’s). It is a polska as described and, like polskas (polskor) in general, is in medium 3/4 time, with the fast phrasing of the melody playing about with the rhythm. If you tap your foot on beats one and three, it falls into place.

Thanks for posting!

Re: Flypolska

Further to earlier note . .

In the Huddlestone/Maas clip above, the first tune in the set, which they name as ‘Slängpolska från Småland’, is also known as ‘Juringius polska’ and is on this site at https://thesession.org/tunes/15588 (where it is inevitably listed as a waltz).

Re: Flypolska

Bazza, you’re right, it is in 3/4 time. I changed the note values and bar lines (see above) - it makes more sense now. Thanks.

The first tune, ‘Slängpolska från Småland’, in the Huddlestone/Maas clip is indeed Juringius polska, listed as such on this site, but also referred to in other places as the more generic ‘Slängpolska från Småland’ (efter Juringius). I’m becoming quite fond of Swedish polskas, particularly their rhythmic nature.

Re: Flypolska

Intriguing how people can hear the same tune in varying ways. I also rewrote this one in 3/4, but to my ear, the bar lines fell slightly differently. For comparison (if of interest) my transcription is in the Tune Library pages at http://www.rudemex.co.uk/Tune%20library/Scandinavian/01tunelib_Scandi.php

I share your fascination with Swedish polskas, though I admit to having trouble with the rhythms of some of them. I’m told you really have to watch the dancers if you want to get the idea of how they’re supposed to work.

Re: Flypolska

A correction on my first post - that is Gabi Maas playing violin, and Jamie Huddlestone on accordion.
