The Chromatica

This is a tune I learnt from Catherine Ward’s fiddle playing in Cosham, Hampshire, but it was originally written for the concertina by Mart Bradley in Bognor Regis, Sussex.
Those accidentals look weird on paper but they are correct, not a notation error!

Re: The Chromatica

I like the tune - it has a very nice swing to it but I believe something is amiss in the notation for the last 3 measures. Is something like this intended:(?)

Re: The Chromatica

No I think it’s correct… at the end of the repeat of the B part it goes right back to the start and the introductory c and d.
But your version would work too 🙂

Yes it has a good swing and I like the slightly sinister kletzmer type feel to it.

Re: The Chromatica

Great to see this on The Session. The sheet music is exactly correct but I agree the alternative ending would work. We end it up with a full 13 note chromatic run up from e to e then add the triad below - e c a. If I could understand the ABC I could write it for you!!

Re: The Chromatica

This should be in every keyless flute players’ tune book and periodically practiced as an etude. What a wonderful study in cross fingering and half-holing it is. Too few keyless players take chromatics seriously, thinking it’s fool’s errand, but it can be achieved by all players with a good ear for intonation. This is a great chromatic study for an intermediate flute or whistle player.

Re: The Chromatica

"Aye, Wullie, it’s mair clever than musical"… Pipe Major G.S. MacLennan [RIP].
I don’t care what a "wonderful study" it may or may not be, it’s just not a very good piece of music IMHO, and happily, not very likely to appear in any traditional Irish session.

Re: The Chromatica

Kenny’s Comment is as incorrect as it is churlish: the tune has found favour with some local musicians and is played in at least 2 ITM sessions to my certain knowledge.

Re: The Chromatica

Please tell me what was "incorrect" ? "Churlish" I can live with. Jeremy invites us all to say whether we do or don’t like any particular tune posted here. I clearly stated that it was my opinion, and I’m not apologising for that. Also, I’m not going to insult you for having a different opinion. Carry on.

Fair play mate, respect.

Re: The Chromatica

PS we play it last in a set preceded by “My darling asleep” and “Sliabh Russell.” It works well in a session - honest,
