Farm Hill Lasses

I learned this from Jimmy O’Brien Moran who said it was a Paddy Coneely tune.

Farm Hill Lasses, X:2

This version of Lasses Of Farm Hill (under that title, not Farm Hill Lasses, but obviously the same tune) is from a handwritten manuscript collection of "Old Irish Airs" produced in 1842 by the Irish folklorist Henry Philerin Hudson and now in the Boston Public Library. I’ve reproduced it exactly as found there, except the manuscript has no indication of tempo. The tune as given here has an abrupt ending, but that’s the way it is in the manuscript. It seems to be quite a rare tune: I’ve never heard it performed or seen it included in another book, and the only reference I can find to a recorded version is on the 2013 album Take Me Tender by Jimmy O’Brien Moran, who is mentioned in the notes to X:1.

I’ve included an adaptation of this air in my composition for solo flute Three Old Irish Airs; anyone interested can find an audio file of it (generated with software as a demo) at:
