Cadgers Of The Canongate

This tune was published in one of Bremner’s Collections in 1751, and subsequently in Gow and a couple of the 19th century anthologies (Skye Collection, Kerr’s Merry Melodies). A dance of the same name, alongside the tune, was published in Walsh’s Caledonian Country Dances (c1748), so the tune and the dance are linked.

The setting given is slightly different to the ones mentioned above, and is taken from a 1981 LP called ‘Fergusson’s Auld Reekie’, recorded by members of the Edinburgh group Jock Tamson’s Bairns and Billy Kay, and exploring the poetry of Robert Fergusson (1750-1774).

Thanks Nigel, I do have that very LP, but a long time since I played it! Must get it out again: turntable still works!
