Is this tune a Donegal Highland? That’s how I was taught it.

m

A slightly different version which I learnt in Bristol is as follows:

A>ag>a eA|F>Ad>c BB|A>ag>a eA|
1 F>AG>B cG:|2 F>AG>B ce fc|da gf|ee fa|
1 (3gfe (3dcB (3Ace (3agf:|2 g>a (3bag a2 a2||

Apart from a change to the rhythm of the 3rd beat of the 2nd bar of part A, the main changes are to part B and are relatively minor except that there is now no d-sharp in the second bar.

This tune goes well with The Seaweed on the Yellow Cliff (another highland), which I hope to post in the fairly near future.

I have today posted The Seaweed on the Yellow Cliff, a highland which goes well with Jimmy Lyons.

Source for both ~ being one in the same with variations:
James Scott Skinner

I’m being thick…..

Could someone please tell me if this tune is traditional or not?
Cheers.

It is a tune from Donegal, from what I know, and yes I belieive it is tradtional, but if you brought it to a session not many would know it.

This is obviously a Scots tune. And composed by Scot Skinner?

“Jimmy Lyons’ Highland Fling”

inspired by Trevor Jennings shakey(?) 4/4(?) transcription above. There is still a lot left to be desired but the 1st part lends itself well to this rhythmic rewriting.

Re: Jimmy Lyons

This tune is not the Miller o‘ Hirn, though it has some similarities. The University of Aberdeen have digitised all of Scott Skinner’s music and even have links to audio recordings of him playing the music himself. The Miller o’ Hirn can be found here http://www.abdn.ac.uk/scottskinner/display.php?ID=JSS0098
