Saely Kelly

Slow reel. Transcribed from the flute playing of Barry Kerr on track 4 of his album "Boy in a Boat." This is a fine tune.

Re: Saely Kelly

This is actually an O’Carolan tune called Susannah Kelly. #75 in Donal O’Sullivan’s book "Carolan The Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper, which I think must be considered the definitive work on Carolan’s music. According to O’Sullivan’s notes the tune was incorrectly identified as Saely Kelly in some of Buntings manuscripts. It has been recorded be several people, most notably by Janet Harbison as Saely Kelly, apparently the name picked up from some of the Bunting manuscripts the O’Sullivan refers to.

I tried to post the version from O’Sullivan here ( I had thought it was already on the site but I do not find it), but I was unable to post it as another setting as it is in 2/4 time rather than 4/4 and I could not change the time signature. I will post it as a separate tune.

Janet Harbison’s fine version is found on her recording with Clarsheree - Feasting with Carolan and can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-xqZb8fyp4. She also recorded it on album with the Belfast Harp Orchestra - The Belfast Harp Orchestra with Janet Harbison.

Re: Saely Kelly

Sorry I am unable to post the abc’s for the version from O’Sullivan or my transcription of Janet Harbison’s version because at this time. Since I can not change any of the header fields (specifically L:1/16) I can not get it to appear correctly without major revisions to the abc notation. I will try and do this at some later time.

Saely Kelly, X:2

Thanks to DonaldK for the info on how to adjust the header fields. This is the setting as it is on the O’Sullivan book, unless of course I have made some mistakes that I missed. My cat, Susanna "Saely" Kelly tried to help too! 🙂 The chords are mine but they really represent the bass line I play in my finger style guitar arrangement.

Re: Saely Kelly

It’s actually by Thomas Connollon but Turlough O’Carolan created the song-texts. The tune was written down by a (very young) Bunting and there are several versions extant.
Here’s an interesting link to hames of composers and tunes ‘associated’ with them: http://pybertra.free.fr/ceol/tunes.htm

Re: Saely Kelly

I see that I overlooked in the Donal O’Sullivan’s notes to Susanna Kelly that Bunting ascribed the tune to Thomas Connellan. For anyone interested, there is a wealth of information not just about the tunes but also and the cultural historical background of the times, a lot of which seems to come from journals, i.e. 18th century blogs, that various people of those times kept.

I also want to thank Peter for the link to the site on the Ancient Music of Ireland. I had seen that years ago but somewhere along the line I had lost track of it.
