The Iron Man (strathspey)

I was taught this tune yesterday by my teacher in honour of Burns Night today, when she and her band are due to play it and many more Scottish and Donegal tunes at a ceili.
She called it The Shetland Fiddler.

The question came up on another list I belong to as to whether the Iron Man would be an inveterate drinker of Irn Bru? :-D
Seriously, though, does anyone know the source of the name? I’m wondering if it had to do with the strong-man craze of the 1890s.

The Iron Man

I believe that J.Scott Skinner wrote this tune to honor his benefactor, a man who was an iron magnate.

The Iron Man

He was William McHardy, Skinner’s benefactor and friend, for whom he also wrote The Laird O’ Drumblair. Tune not usually played with repeats: JSS himself didn’t play any on the early 20th C recording of him. ( Recordings made between 1905 and 1922 available on a CD from Temple Records). Flows better if played straight through, I think.

Re: The Iron Man

Tommy Peoples plays this with William Marshal’s. Does anyone have a setting that they would like to add for William Marshal’s?

The Iron Man, X:2

Learned this tune from A Chieftains Celebration album. Like it a lot. Some versions I’ve heard are AABB and some are AB. The Chieftains did it AB on the album.

Re: The Iron Man

We have it in a "Scott Skinner Set" of slow air, strathspey and reel.
"Hector the Hero" first, AA BB - key of D (original was A)
"The Iron Man" ABAB - key of A
"The Spey in Spate" ABAB - key of D
