This is a jig setting of the Scottish tune “Logie o‘ Buchan”, which itself is found in old texts dating back to the 17th century. According to G Farquhar Graham, an early sighting of the tune is in the Atkinson manuscript (1694) with the title “Tak Tent to the Ripells, Gudeman”; a little later in the Macfarlane manuscript (1740) it’s called “The Ripells, Gudeman” and then in Oswald’s Caledonian Companion it’s “Beware of the Ripells”. These refer to an old song - a version of which Burns published in The Merry Muses of Caledonia (“I Rede You Beware o’ th Ripples”). Other names for the tune include “The Taylor’s Faun Thro the Bed” and “The March of the Corporation of Tailors”.
Fascinating, thanks for that context Nigel!
If I had a nickel for every time I said “Tak Tent to the Ripells” …
“Logie O’ Buchan” is a gorgeous song/ballad!
