Re: Stoidhle Neill Ghobha

Ok, so it seems to be an old scottish strasthpey, not a composition

Re: Stoidhle Neill Ghobha

The title means "Niel Gow’s Style" and refers to the famed fiddler’s playing style. The tune of that title was composed by Captain Simon Fraser of Knockie and published in his 1874 collection "Airs and Melodies.." alongside another of his tributes to Gow, "Caledonia’s Wail for Niel Gow" (https://thesession.org/tunes/12229).

However, the tune posted above isn’t "Niel Gow’s Style".

Stoidhle Neill Ghobha, X:2

I posted a second setting which, I believe, is closer to what is played on "wooden flute and fiddle". I transposed it to Ador (instead of Gdor on the recording) so that is can easily be played on a D flute. But I suppose Calum Stewart actually plays it on C flute to make it sounds in Gdor.

Re: Stoidhle Neill Ghobha, X:2

You don’t need a C flute to play this tune. Calum plays it on an 8-keyed wooden flute which is fully chromatic and capable to play in Gmin or any other key.

Re: Stoidhle Neill Ghobha

Is it just me or are the two "settings" posted here actually completely different tunes?
And yes, a keyed flute has no problems with either of them, but A Dor is easier for the second, though I have to give it a go in G Dor on the F flute…

Re: Stoidhle Neill Ghobha

They actually are the same tune.

Here is X:2 https://open.spotify.com/track/3u6wbjl0D9pTIDq5IvIxiI?si=sIuxcV9VSTeSODTieZaDmQ

The youtube video associated with X:1 is no longer available. I loved this video so much, makes me sad.

I don’t understand why he is putting everyting in private while not even being able to sell his CDs :(
If anyone reading this is lucky enough to have Hunter’s Moon, please tell us!
