Ladies In The Salt Pound

Another Newfoundland single. Composed by Kevin Broderick (father of Nfld fiddler D’Arcy Broderick). The Irish Descendants and Daniel Payne have both recorded it.

"Salt Pound" could refer to one of two things.

The first, is a place where they store rock salt for use in salting the cod fish. These pounds often held a certain amount of salt, by weight, so that merchants could easily charge fisherman the exam amount.

The second, is a place where they pack up cod, layered with salt, to preserve it. The fish could be left here for quite some time.
