Wow, I love this. Thanks for posting!

Re: Le Reel De Violon Du Monte En Vielle

Has someone any clues about the history behind the tune ? Why is it called “Fiddle Tunned Like A Viol” for instance ?

Re: Le Reel De Violon Du Monte En Vielle

Wow, that coig video is a BLAST!

Re: Le Reel De Violon Du Monte En Vielle

This cannot have been composed by Calum Pasqua who is in his late forties or early fifties. As you can see there is a video on YouTube of Jean Carignan playing this in a Canadian documentary filmed in 1975! I doubt Calum could have composed this before he was born. This is almost certainly a traditional tune.

Re: Le Reel De Violon Du Monte En Vielle

Here is the answer to the question asked by juberl a year ago.
In French, the title of this tune should be “Reel du violon monté en vielle”, which means “tuned like a vielle” indeed. In this title, it would be very surprising if the French word “vielle” referred to the vielle, a medieval bowed string instrument whose evolution led to the modern violin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vielle). The tuning of a fiddle “monté en vielle”, i.e. AEAE, thus clearly refers to the drones of the “vielle à roue” or hurdy-gurdy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurdy-gurdy).
In Quebec music, a fiddle can also be tuned in two other ways: in “grondeuse”, i.e. ADAE; and AEAC# (no particular name).

Re: Le Reel De Violon Du Monte En Vielle

It makes sense that the fiddle tuned AEAE would work well with this tune as most of the tune is on the upper two strings with occasional notes going to G# or E. Haven’t tried it but it makes sense. A lot of old time Appalachia tunes are in double A tuning.

Re: Le Reel De Violon Du Monte En Vielle

Wow, how do you tune a fiddle AEAC#? How does the E string do that, go lower? Hmm.

Re: Le Reel De Violon Du Monte En Vielle

Yes, the E string is tuned down to C#. Gives a special sound. Search for recording of e.g. “Reel du Pendu”.
