Memories of Father Angus MacDonnell

This lovely march is a composition by Cape Breton fiddler Mike MacDougall. It’s popular in Edinburgh areas.

I’ve been enjoying this simple tune on my new wooden flute, but it will be nice on guitar and banjo, too. It goes well with modern Breton hornpipe The Last Pint (G).

Fr.Angus MacDonald

We play this as a Schottische rather than as a hornpipe. We use it lots for the Canadian Barn Dance. Its good to discover that the tune is Canadian too. We pair it with Sidlaw Hills.

What is so clever about it is its simplicity, only the first bar is different between the a and b parts.

Anna-Wendy

I heard this lovely tune played Anna-Wendy Stevenson on a front porch in NC. She’s a wonderful scottish fiddler from Edinburgh.

Found that on the web…

Re: Memories Of Father Angus MacDonnell

Anyone heard Rachel Davis’ rendition of this on her album (by her name?) If so, does anyone know the names of the strathspey she plays immediately following it? I’ve picked it up by ear, but it’d be nice to have something to call it!

Re: Memories Of Father Angus MacDonnell

According to the Cape Breton Fiddle Recordings Index, the strathspeys are “The Duchess of Hamilton” and “Lord Lovat’s Welcome”. 🙂
