The Wee Man From Uist

Transcribed from the playing of Alisdair Fraser and Natalie Haas on their 2011 album "Highlander’s Farewell".

Re: The Wee Man From Uist

I don’t think I’ve come across this tune elsewhere under this title, but it appears to be related to an air called "Moladh Beinn Dobhrain" (In Praise of Ben Dorain) which Aonghas Grant plays; he says it "is formed on the basis of a pibroch" (The Glengarry Collection Vol.1, (Pacific, Missouri, 2010)).

I don’t think Grant has recorded it, but back in 1976, the English fiddler Dave Swarbrick recorded it as "Ben Dorian" on his album "Swarbrick" and published it in his tune book Dave Swarbrick Takes a Bow (London 1978).

Re: The Wee Man From Uist

I looked that title up in the Highland pipe music encyclopedia, they have:

The Wee Man From Uist by A J MacLellan, 2/4 March, John MacKenzie’s Collection of Bagpipe Music.

I don’t have that book, it might be an unrelated tune.

Re: The Wee Man From Uist

I think it’s likely to be the same tune, Richard. Jim MacGillivray plays it as the tune here on pipetunes.ca - seems unlikely the one listed in Pekaar would be different.

Hunting through the net I came across this:
https://soundcloud.com/tony-cheseaux/the-wee-man-from-uist-arranged-by-tony-cheseaux

It’s obviously ripped off (pretty much exactly) from Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas. He also has the cheek to call it Irish.
You can also pay 124.95€ for the score of "his" arrangement here:

That’s a bargain, eh?

The Wee Man From Uist, X:2

This is the 2/4 March

The Wee Man From Uist

written by A. J. MacLellan, as played by William McCallum on his Pipers Of Distinction album.

I’ve kept it in 4/4 for clarity and so that the "play audio" feature doesn’t play the tune at double speed.
